Harold John Smith (August 24, 1916 - January 28, 1994) was an American actor.

Hal Smith

Biography[]

He is known in Dr. Seuss cartoons as a Narrator from The Hoober-Bloob Highway, Josiah from Halloween is Grinch Night, and McGillicuddy and Good Fairy-in-Chief from Pontoffel Pock, Where Are You?. It should be known that since Mister Hoober Bloob (Bob Holt) narrates as well, that Hal Smith actually voices the Math School Teacher, and is the Story Teller of The Tweedle Beetles. If Bob Holt, Hal Smith, and also Hans Conried ever tried hard enough, they could actually voice each others characters.

Other work done by Hal Smith includes numerous often uncredited background extra roles typically in Westerns. Years later, after dozens of small parts, he gradually shifted towards voice acting, primarily beginning with Clutch Cargo because he worked on all the episodes. This is a very low budget and very crude even for the time Syncro Vox animation. Since Clutch Cargo is the first attempt at Syncro Vox, it is obvious they used the technique. Later, in Captain Fathom, and Space Angel, the technique was less obvious, and animation was improved. In Clutch Cargo he was the narrator in all the episodes, and voiced many other characters. He returned for Space Angel for the Narrator role again, and also for Engineer Taurus.

A few years later, he began a lengthy role as Owl. However, Owl is absent in Winnie The Pooh And Tigger Too. He is also an understudy Winnie the Pooh in the Winnie the Pooh franchise. In Winnie The Pooh Seasons For Giving, he took over for a recently deceased Sterling Holloway. While he was able to successfully voice Winnie The Pooh, his portrayal is very wooden. He continued to voice both characters during most of the 1980s. After that, he became extremely busy, and returned to voicing Owl. They decided to make Owl a recurring character until Hal Smith's death in 1994. After that, Owl became a main character again. Meanwhile, he did voice Owl and Winnie The Pooh Bear outside of The New Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh, and also voiced Torbet, Ophelia, Dexter, and a Librarian Prairie Dog character in the Sheriff Piglet episode Paw And Order.

You can also hear Hal Smith in the first version of Duck Tales, the version where they are in preschool. Hal Smith voiced the scruffy voiced business enemy of Scrooge McDuck, and also voiced the business partner of Scrooge McDuck known as Gyro Gearloose. Hal Smith also tried to voice numerous other Disney Television Animation projects around this time, since Disney did not make any cartoons for television until they launched their own cable channel. Television was largely dominated by Hanna Barbera, which Hal Smith worked on nearly every cartoon they made.

Hal Smith was the preferred voice of Santa Claus for any small time Christmas Special.
