Inside Your Outside! All About The Human Body is the twelfth book in The Cat in the Hat's Learning Library series. It was written by Tish Rabe and illustrated by Aristides Ruiz, and published on August 26 2003. The book follows The Cat in the Hat as he educates Sally and Conrad Walden along with the reader on the different parts of the human body.
Plot[]
The book begins with The Cat in the Hat entering Sally and Conrad's house while they are doing schoolwork, where he says that the body is always moving and to "take a look." He then takes them outside, where he introduces them to the Inside-Your-Outside Machine. He is holding tickets while Thing One and Thing Two gesture for them to take seats.
Once they are inside the machine, they see an x-ray image of the brain on a screen with Sally's head. The Cat in the Hat discusses the functions of the brain while they move onto a bigger screen that shows a top view of the brain, the two halves of the brain labelled "left brain" and "right brain." they are accompanied by illustrations of each part of the brain's primary responsibilities. Thing One and Thing Two demonstrate the size of the brain in a small illustration in the corner of the page.
Sally and Conrad are then introduced to The Feleton Family, a family whose skeletons become visible when they stand in the sun. The illustration shows Sally and Conrad shaking hands with members of the Feleton family. The Cat in the Hat explains the function of the skeleton on this page and the next page, which has diagrams pointing out different bones on Feleton family members. On the adjacent page, Thing One holds a magnifying glass to an ear bone and a grain of rice, showing how small the bone is. Thing Two is shown with a broken and then a healed arm to show how bones can heal when they are broken.
The next illustration shows Sally and Conrad seated on the machine looking at various photos of joints in the body. In the very next one they are out of their seats again, watching as The Cat in the Hat uses an x-ray machine to show where the spinal cord is in the body. Thing One holds a vertebrae in one corner of the illustration, while an outline of one of the Things shows the nervous system in the other corner.
Sally and Conrad are then in a room with five booths connected to a large model of the brain that are each dedicated to the five senses: smell, hearing, touch, taste, and sight. The Cat in the Hat presents Sally a flower to smell at the smell booth while Conrad holds a kitten and cautiously touches a hot pizza at the touch booth. Thing One is using a hearing amplifier at the hearing booth and Thing Two is holding a sign while seated at the sight booth. In the next illustration, The Cat in the Hat holds a diagram of the ear at the hearing booth and rings a bell to demonstrate how the ear works while Sally and Conrad eat various foods at the taste booth. Thing One demonstrates how dizziness works in a small illustration on the page. The Cat in the Hat then explains vision at the sight booth, and Thing One and Thing Two demonstrate near-sightedness and far-sightedness in an illustration.
Sally and Conrad are then back on the machine and are introduced to the topic of muscles, where a man and woman made of muscle stand before them while The Cat in the Hat explains how muscles are used. Thing One and Thing Two demonstrate smiling and frowning to show how muscles are used in the face. Sally and Conrad are then shown a large anatomical heart on one page, and on the adjacent page use a stethoscope to listen to The Cat in the Hat's heartbeat. A transparent outline of one of the Things shows the circulatory system and Thing Two is observing blood cells under a microscope in the corner of the page.
The next illustration shows The Cat in the Hat, Sally, and Conrad in scuba-diving gear inside of a tank labelled "Blood Tank" where they observe red and white blood cells. A diagram of white blood cells fighting off infection is shown, and there is a small illustration of Thing One and Thing Two observing a red blood cell. They are then seated back on the machine and move on to two large models of lungs with The Cat in the Hat's head on them, one showing inhaling and one showing exhaling. They then move on to a diagram of the digestive system, where their seats are raised so they can view the different parts better. Thing Two pats Thing One's stomach in an illustration in the corner. They are then shown a diagram of a kidney on one page, and on the adjacent page Sally and Conrad watch a model of a bladder expel liquid into a toilet. On the same page a drawing of Thing Two anxiously waiting in line for a bathroom is shown while Thing One holds up a sign.
After they exit the Inside-Your-Out Machine, The Cat in the Hat points to Sally and Conrad and leaves them with a message: "Your brain and your heart will guide all that you do. Someone special is inside your outside- it's... YOU!"
