Is A Camel A Mammal? All About Mammals is the second book in The Cat in the Hat's Learning Library series. It was published on October 13, 1998, and was written by Tish Rabe and illustrated by Jim Durk. The book follows The Cat in the Hat as he educates Sally and Conrad Walden about mammals all over the world.

Plot[]

The book begins with Sally and Conrad doing schoolwork, and being interrupted by The Cat in the Hat followed by an array of different mammals. He says he is writing a book about mammals, and wants them to take a look. The next illustration shows The Cat in the Hat holding a kitten while Thing Two spins wool from a nearby sheep and Thing One knits a pair of gloves. Sally and Conrad look in awe at two porcupines and a hedgehog on a table.

The next illustration depicts a mountain goat on top of a mountain, a prairie dog in the desert, a dolphin in the ocean along with some orange fish, and a lion in the sahara. The next pages show The Cat in the Hat holding a book surrounded by different types of mammals. The next drawing shows The Cat in the Hat holding a pygmy shrew and a dime for size comparison in his hand while Sally and Conrad look on in amazement. The siblings are then shown using a hand device to stabilize a stack of twenty-seven elephants on a malfunctioning scale. In the next illustration, The Cat in the Hat, Sally and Conrad are in scuba gear observing a blue whale underwater.

On the next page, they are back inside of the siblings' house, where The Cat in the Hat is hanging upside-down inside a closet next to a bat. A baby hippo is swimming in Carlos K. Krinklebine's fish tank while two bobcats try to swipe at him. The next illustration then shows two families of armadillos with bows on their tails, and The Cat in the Hat holding a spoon with eighteen baby opossums in them to show their size. The illustration also includes a mother kangaroo, bandicoot and wallaby with their babies in their pouches.

The Cat in the Hat, Sally and Conrad are then pictured in snowy weather observing a snowshoe hare. The adjacent page shows them in the spring where Sally and Conrad are looking for the camouflaged rabbit while The Cat in the Hat sniffs a flower. The next illustration shows the three with clothespins pinching their noses shut while they watch a skunk spray at a dog. The next pages show a polar bear, walrus, sea lion and seal swimming in water and a mother bear and her cubs snuggled inside a cave. The next illustration shows a variety of animals, including a giraffe, cow, bison, moose, elk and deer. Here, the moose's antlers are shown to fall off.

On The next page, Sally, Conrad, and Thing One and Thing Two are shown to be serving food at a dining table full of animals. The next page shows an anteater eating ants, mice eating cheese, and Thing One and Thing Two holding a fork with a sausage and a fork with leaves on it. Sally and Conrad are then taken to the desert, where they are riding on a camel led by The Cat in the Hat as he holds up his foot from the hot sand. Thing One and Thing Two hold up a sign.

The three are then back at the siblings' house, where The Cat in the Hat tells them that his book is almost complete, and that he has two more mammals he wants them to meet. Sally and Conrad are shown to be searching for the mammals in their living room. On the next page, The Cat in the Hat takes off his hat to reveal another small version of himself underneath, while explaining that Sally and Conrad are the mammals he was referencing.
