Toucans are birds found in The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!.

Appearance[]

Toucans are black. Their colorful bills are either orange or rainbow-colored. A toucan can weigh up to 20 pounds and be 5 feet long, with short legs.

Information[]

Toucans are native to Southern Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean region. They generally live in rainforest regions. They make their nests in tree hollows and holes excavated by other animals—the toucan bill has very limited use as an excavation tool.

Toucans are primarily (fruit eating), but are opportunistically omnivorous and will take insects and small lizards. They also plunder nests of smaller birds, taking eggs and nestlings. This probably provides a crucial addition of protein to their diet. Certainly, apart from being systematically predatory as well as frugivorous, like many omnivorous birds, they particularly prefer animal food for feeding their chicks. They can play catch with a berry.
